The Stockholm School of Economics and its Center for Sports and Business are establishing a new professorship focused on sports and business – the first of its kind in the school’s history.
“This is very gratifying, and we hope to contribute to strengthening the international competitiveness of Swedish sports,” says Martin Carlsson-Wall, Professor and head of the Center for Sports and Business.
Swedish Professional Football Leagues and the Stockholm School of Economics have been collaborating for many years. Currently, a leadership training program for staff in the Allsvenskan and Superettan clubs is underway, and historically, the parties have collaborated on many different occasions. The new professorship, made possible by a donation from Malin and Stefan Linder, will be held by Martin Carlsson-Wall. This theoretically offers even greater opportunities for collaboration between the parties, as there is now more room for both additional research projects and closer cooperation with Swedish sports as well as selected international clubs, leagues, and federations.
“Global sports face many challenges. It is becoming increasingly commercial while traditions, identity, and voluntary work remain critical success factors. The fact that the Stockholm School of Economics now has a professorship in this field strengthens the school’s strategy to identify global issues that are also important in many people’s local daily lives,” says Martin Carlsson-Wall.
The Stockholm School of Economics’ Center for Sports and Business is an interdisciplinary research center aimed at creating a more research-driven sports world. The intention is to conduct research and education on sports as a financial asset class, how sustainability work can be integrated into federations, leagues, and clubs, and the role new technology can play in the development of Swedish and international sports.
